The Jacob Simmons 5K Spud Run is a Memorial Run that honours the life of Jacob Simmons of Belfast, PE who was an avid athlete within the community. Jacob participated in many sports through his life, including basketball, soccer, volleyball, rugby, football, track and field, wrestling, running, and cycling.

The PEI Marathon remembers Jacob Simmons for being an active participant during the Marathon Weekend. Jacob played the role of Tate (the Potato Board Mascot) during the early years of Foxtrot Run, originally known as The Kids’ Spud Run. Jacob was a runner in the 2019 PEI Full Marathon and was named PEI Roadrunner 2019 Male Runner of the Year.

Outside of sports, Jacob is remembered for his interest in his family farm and their agricultural land drainage business, being a member of the provincial chess team, an avid reader, a great friend to many and a very genuine person.  He was killed by an impaired driver while cycling on June 12, 2020.   

Course Description

The 5K Run is a looped course, starting at the Confederation Centre on Grafton Street and finishing at the corner of Great George Street and Grafton Street. Participants will pass through, Victoria Park following the Park Road along Charlottetown Harbour. After leaving Victoria Park, participants continue onto Queen Elizabeth Drive and then take a right turn to make a loop through some residential neighbourhoods. After the final right turn, it is 300m of straight and flat road, perfect for a strong finish in front of the cenotaph and historic Province House.

Registration for the PEI Marathon Weekend October 15-17th, 2021 is now open. All planning will be in compliance with PEI’s Chief Public Health Office.

Please note that any necessary changes required by the CPHO office prior to event weekend will be put in place at that time and details will be posted.
